Godzilla: Minus One

Genre: Sci-Fi/ Monster Horror

Release Date: 2023

Why is this Godzilla better than any of the others? Plot = Big dinosaur + tiny city + generic characters (water ripple in cup). I think that's BEDMAS, right? Well, this movie has more than that because it is centered around Kōichi. In post-WWII Japan, the country is at its lowest point, and for those who served, the welcome back isn’t exactly warm. People are trying to rebuild their lives, but a giant lizard shooting a radioactive energy beam from its mouth has other plans. Like Godzilla Minus One, Train to Busan delivers heart-pounding action and deep emotion— after scrolling through this list, discover more incredible films you don’t want to miss on this page: Best Movies Available For FREE

Arrival

Genre: Sci-Fi/ Drama

Release Date: 2016

I think this movie is painfully underrated for its ability to give us an alien invasion story while still feeling so fresh. In a decade where the most popular movies (aka the MCU) were all about aliens coming to Earth, this grounded take takes you on a psychological journey. Are they here for war? Peace? Or just curiosity? Every decision made in communication is crucial. Directed by my fellow Canuck, French Canadian film director Denis Villeneuve (if you were coming from my best movies list, this is my second glazing for Denis... look up glazing on Urban Dictionary). Visually breathtaking, and the score in this film will give you chills. So put on some good headphones or connect your speakers.

The Call

Genre: Psychological Thriller

Release Date: 2020

Now, this is a Netflix original film, which 8/10 times means the movie is cheeks. Fortunately, this happens to be one of the 2/10 times where the movie doesn’t share characteristics with a posterior. Speaking of 2, in this South Korean film, we have Seo-yeon and Young-sook. One lives in the present, and the other lives in the past. They are connected by a phone that, over time, leads them to build a relationship. But when you start messing around with the past, you might regret ever picking up the phone in the first place. This horror/thriller keeps you guessing all the way until the end... definitely not cheeks... Good job, Netflix.

Boyz N The Hood

Genre: Drama/ Coming of Age

Release Date: 1991

One name: John Singleton (okay, technically two names), aka the youngest director and first Black American in movie history to be nominated for Best Director at the Oscars! If you don’t know anything about this movie, then great. Boyz n the Hood follows a group of friends as little kids in L.A. and then flashes forward to them in high school. Rap music has become pretty common as the catalyst for telling the story of struggle in underprivileged Black communities. This film does not fall short of balancing the fun, the conflicts, and the misfortunes that many deal with on a day-to-day basis, even to this day. And hey, Ice Cube is in this!

Blakkklansman

Genre: Biography/ Cop Drama

Release Date: 2018

A Black man infiltrated the KKK, and if you didn’t know, it’s a true story! Directed by the remarkable Spike Lee, this movie is 2 hours of fun (kind of strange to say about a movie with the KKK, but trust me). BlacKkKlansman does a wonderful job mixing historical accuracy with satire. John David Washington’s performance is outstanding and proves he belongs in a leading role with his on-screen presence, and not just because of his last name. And by last name, I don’t mean the fact he shares his last name with the capital of the United States... I’m referring to his father, Denzel. The unique visual storytelling in this film is on par with Lee’s previous filmography, making this indeed a Spike Lee joint. Black cinema thrives in all genres, from the gripping history of BlacKkKlansman to the heartfelt animation of Soul—check out more essential films on this page: Best Movies You Need To See!
